Hundreds of food and beverage workers went on strike Wednesday morning at Sky Harbor International Airport.
Cynthia Reyes is with Unite Here Local 11, a labor union representing hospitality workers. She says wages haven’t kept up with the rising cost of living.
“We’re fighting for our dignity, for respect, for better wages. There are a lot of people that are struggling that are working full time hours and are unable to fully pay their rent," Reyes said.
The workers collective bargaining agreement with SSP America, which runs food and beverage concessions at the airport, expired in May.
Negotiations on a new agreement are scheduled to begin Nov. 1.
