Arizona State University has appointed a new curator at large for its museum.

The daughter of two creative parents, Erin Joyce was raised in northern Arizona and began her prior work as a curator on an independent basis in California. She returned to the Valley in 2015 and worked at the Heard Museum for several years.

One of the initiatives Joyce is working on is to include more artwork from Indigenous communities. Another is extractive labor models, “looking at huge stratifications in compensation at museums from directors at major museums making millions of dollars but frontline workers making minimum wage,” she said.

Joyce will also closely collaborate with staff to expand the permanent collection and public programming.

“My colleague Ninabah Winton organized a really thoughtful and beautiful exhibition called, ‘Everything’s a little fuzzy.’ It’s all from the permanent collection of the museum and she’s created this really smart dialogue around care and memory in this sort of post-COVID landscape that we live in,” said Joyce.

The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and admission is free.
