Fecal bacteria shuts down portions of Lake Mead's recreation areas

Some of Lake Mead’s recreation areas are closed indefinitely due to high levels of fecal bacteria in Arizona Hot Springs. Spokesman John Haynes said that while people have been known to relieve themselves in the water, routine testing discovered the contamination late last week.

“We routinely do water monitoring around the park on a regular basis to check for a variety of impurities, toxins, bacteria in the water to make sure that all the water at Lake Mead National Recreation is safe,” said Haynes.

No illnesses have been reported so far. Haynes said that when water quality meets federal and state standards, the affected areas will reopen.

The closed areas include:

  • Arizona Hot Springs
  • Arizona Hot Springs Trail
  • White Rock Canyon parking lot on Highway 93
