College essay writing is changing – and becoming more important today

Well, it might be just the middle of the fall semester, but high school students around the country are preparing their college applications for next year. And a big part of that is their college essay.

This year, it’s even more important. In the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision getting rid of affirmative action in college admission, more students are using their college essay to tell their stories, their struggles and the challenges they have faced.

At the same time, we’re living now in the age of AI, which can probably write a pretty good college essay too.

Well, Jessica Early literally wrote a book on college essay writing.

Early is a professor of English at Arizona State University and author of the book "Real World Writing for Secondary Students: Teaching the College Admission Essay and Other Gate-Openers for Higher Education."

The Show spoke with her more about writing a good college essay — and how the landscape around it is changing.
