The Peoria Unified School District says contract negotiations with a new superintendent are underway following action on Wednesday by its governing board.
The deadline for the district to respond to a federal lawsuit by a current board member has been extended to Dec. 11.
Kenneth Somers has been a school superintendent twice in Colorado, and he is now on track to be Peoria’s next leader.
First, Somers needs to pass a background check and sign a contract.
Negotiations with Somers were green-lit by the district governing board.
Meanwhile, member Heather Rooks is suing the district for the right to quote Bible verses at public meetings.
Court records connect a recent deadline-extension given to the district to lawyers for Rooks having proposed an expedited schedule to address her First Amendment claims.
Both sides say it did not include a settlement offer.
