Phoenix City Council to consider 3rd police settlement in less than 45 days

The Phoenix City Council is scheduled on Wednesday to consider another proposed settlement of a lawsuit involving the Police Department.

If approved, it would be the third such payout in less than 45 days.

The settlements would total more than $11 million combined.

The first payout was to the family of a former Somali refugee who was shot and killed by Phoenix police last year during a rock-throwing incident.

The second payout was to a man who claimed he was injured in 2020 and kept from seeking medical care by officers who knew he’d been wrongly identified as a suspect.

And, if approved, the latest payout of $650,000 would be to the family of a man who died in 2019.

The Arizona Republic reported then that he had a heart attack after officers shot him with a stun gun.
