New bridge over Tonto Creek set to open in May 2024

Construction of the Tonto Creek bridge is set to be finished by May.

It’s near the town of Tonto Basin in Gila County, where multiple people died four years ago after their vehicles were swept away while crossing the flooded creek.

Engineer Tom Goodman says the crossing will officially be called the Greenback Valley Road Bridge.

"It’s gonna have a 6-foot sidewalk on one side, it will have 4-foot shoulders on both sides, and then a 12-foot travel lane in each direction for traffic," Goodman said.

The project will also include work to return a crossroad to its natural state, allowing for wildlife to pass through. The teams expect the whole project to be completed in June.
