Members of Arizona’s congressional delegation say they are frustrated with the Senate for adjourning for the holidays Wednesday without making a deal to address border security.
One big issue left on the table is an emergency foreign-aid package, which includes several billion dollars in aid for Ukraine. Republicans say it should be paired with border security legislation.
“We have a disaster at our border, and so it’s hard to justify to the American people and the American taxpayers that we should spend money on another country when we’re not going to support our own border,” Republican Congresswoman Debbie Lesko said.
Democratic Congressman Raúl Grijalva accused Republicans of avoiding solutions to score political points.
“My Republican colleagues feel that the worse the situation gets on the border, the better it is for them politically,” he said.
In Arizona, the border has been front of mind for weeks, since the federal government closed the port of entry Arizonans pass through to get to Rocky Point due to a huge influx of migrant encounters.
The Senate won’t return until sometime in January.
