Sandra Day O'Connor honored at Phoenix funeral on Dec. 22

A private funeral service for retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was held Friday, Dec. 22, in Phoenix. O’Connor, who was the first woman appointed to the nation’s high court, was memorialized earlier this week at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

She was raised on a rural Arizona ranch near the border with New Mexico. And that’s where she’ll return, says son Scott O’Connor.

"We’re very glad you all chose to be with us today as we say goodbye to mom. This is the last of services planned for her, apart from burying her ashes with our father’s on a remote mountaintop on the Lazy B Ranch, alongside her parents. Next week, our grieving can really begin."

Justice O’Connor died Dec. 1 at the age of 93 from complications of dementia.
