Sinema leads U.S. Senate negotiations on border security

The U.S. Senate adjourned this week without passing a foreign aid and border security package, but Independent Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema says the chamber is still making progress.

The package includes billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine, but Republicans want U.S. border security to be included.

Sinema is working on brokering a compromise, which she says will alienate certain members.

“There will be some individuals who won't be able or won't be willing to support this package and that’s OK,” she told reporters on Wednesday.

Sinema’s communications director, Hannah Hurley, said that negotiators will continue working throughout the holiday break to reach a deal on this issue, which Sinema said is “front of mind.”

Members of Arizona’s Congressional delegation criticized the Senate for adjourning without making a deal, but Hurley said in a text the negotiators are working around the clock.
