Arizona’s top elections official said he will not try to remove Donald Trump from the ballot in 2024.
In Colorado and Maine, Trump is barred from the ballot, because officials there say he violated the 14th Amendment’s clause banning anyone who’s engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States government from holding office, due to his participation in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.
Arizona’s Democratic Secretary of State Adrian Fontes said he’s taking no such action.
“That is up to political challengers or the voters. My job is to follow the law, and so far, that’s what we’ve done,” Fontes said.
In Maine, the Democratic secretary of state ruled to disqualify Trump, but Fontes said Arizona’s rules ensure that Trump can remain on the ballot.
In Colorado, the decision was made by the Colorado Supreme Court, and it’s being challenged.
Other states are considering similar challenges.
If a legal challenge goes through the Arizona courts, Fontes said he’ll follow the courts orders, but he’s not taking any action or position on Trump.
