On Monday, the Bureau of Land Management will begin removing about 1,000 wild burros from the Black Mountain Herd Management Area just west of Kingman.
The Bureau has had to thin the herd six times since 2017.
"The number of burros that would be a healthy sustainable number in that area would be about 478, and right now we’re looking at probably closer to 2,000," said Dolores Garcia is with the Bureau of Land Management.
The round-up will take place over an eight-week period. The burros will be taken to holding facilities and eventually go up for adoption in Florence and Ridgecrest, California.
