Maricopa County offers grants for businesses to add rooms for nursing mothers

Maricopa County is offering grants for businesses to create or enhance lactation spaces for nursing mothers. The rooms can be designed for employees only or public use.

In order to express milk, mothers need to be comfortable and relaxed, which is why private spaces are designated.

If possible, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends nursing moms breastfeed for a year. The most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows Arizona’s breastfeeding rate at one year is 40%, while the rate at six months is nearly 60%.

The CDC says breastfeeding can reduce the risk of certain health conditions for babies and mothers. The Maricopa County Health Department has $30,000 set aside with grants available up to $3,000. Grant applications will be accepteduntil 2 p.m. on Feb. 16.

All applicants must:

  • Participate in two virtual meetings with MCDPH staff (planning and follow up).
  • Submit an invoice for payment by May 24 , 2024.
  • Submit before and after pictures of lactation space.
  • Submit a final narrative report at the conclusion of the project. Report template will be provided upon award.

Project and final narrative report must be completed by June 26, 2024.
