American Airlines cuts 600 customer service jobs in metro Phoenix and Dallas

American Airlines is eliminating more than 300 jobs in metro Phoenix.

American said it’s updating the airline’s contact center organization by moving "lighter-touch" support overseas and launching a new team dedicated to more complex needs.

“Creating this new Customer Success team of upskilled team members and relying on our international team to provide around-the-clock availability will help us not only deliver on that commitment, but provide an even higher level of support in the future,” spokesman Derek Walls said.

In addition to 335 jobs at its Tempe call center, American is cutting 321 in Dallas/Fort Worth. Affected employees are expected to keep working through March.

In a statement to KJZZ News, the airline said impacted employees either work from home or one of our office locations — they are not airport-based team members. Employees who are not hired for another position and those eligible to retire will be offered severance payments. American said it will support employees who want to look for work outside the airline.

American has the largest presence among commercial airlines at Phoenix Sky Harbor International  Airport.
