The Arizona Senate passed a bill on party lines that would give teachers or administrators at public and charter schools the option to read and post the Ten Commandments.
Democratic Sen. Mitzi Epstein says the bill amounts to indoctrination.
"If you post the Ten Commandments and they are commanding people to love God, while certainly that's a beautiful thing, it's not a beautiful thing if your family does not subscribe to that religion," Epstein said.
Decades ago, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against any mandate to post the Ten Commandments. Bill sponsor Republican Sen. Anthony Kern says the optional posting is constitutional.
Arizona has a six-foot monument to the Ten Commandments near the state Capitol. The bill now goes to the House.
