The Phoenix City Council is set to consider calling on the U.S. Justice Department to release more than just a summary of findings from its ongoing investigation.
The move was formally requested by a man who unsuccessfully sued the city after Phoenix police shot and killed his son.
The wrongful death lawsuit by Roland Harris did not go to trial and the case was not revived by appeal.
An attorney for him in that case confirmed Harris is the same man who wants the Phoenix council to seek public release of all findings and supporting facts uncovered by a federal investigation.
His formal petition calls on the mayor and council to admit failing to hold Phoenix police accountable, and admit to allegations still under review by federal authorities.
City staff recommends not conceding those points, but still sending a letter asking the department to release the information Harris wants.
