Tempe police arrest 15 in crackdown on street racing

Police say street racing continues to be a problem in Tempe, and in response they made a significant number of arrests in a crackdown over the weekend.

Police arrested 15 people, towed14 vehicles and seized multiple weapons during a two-day crackdown. The enforcement is part of a larger mission currently underway in Tempe called Operation Slow Down, which encourages officers to ticket drivers pulled over for speeding rather than issue a warning. The operation began in January and continues until later this month.

The number of high-speed drivers continues to be one of Tempe residents’ top concerns, ranking just below homelessness issues and drugs.

In 2023, 24 fatalities occurred in roadway collisions in Tempe, with 18 of those believed to be caused by excessive speed.
