The U.S. Attorney for Arizona created a team to focus on enforcing federal civil rights, including the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The unit has reached a two-year settlement with a Chandler nail salon over allegations of discrimination against a would-be customer.
The settlement stems from a complaint filed with the U.S. Attorney’s Office by an unidentified female who uses a wheelchair.
The settlement says Canvas Nails & Spa denied her a wet pedicure because she didn’t bring someone to help her transfer to a salon chair.
Now the company owes her $500 for emotional distress that has reportedly kept her from going back to a salon.
Canvas Nails & Spa has to document each time it denies service-modification requests for people with disabilities.
Any new discrimination complaint the company receives must be reported to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The attorney for Canvas Nails & Spa did not return a call seeking comment.
