Tempe City Council plans letter against Arizona anti-DEI bill

Republicans in the state Legislature have taken aim at measures promoting diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI. That includes a Senate bill that would ban city governments from using public funds for anything promoting DEI — including staff training or hiring DEI officers.

Tempe officials were asked to issue a statement against the bill at the City Council’s most recent work study session.

Velicia Humes is Tempe’s chief diversity officer.

“We actually try to look for bills or legislation that actually back our values so that we can help promote those," she said.

At the work study session, City Council members reinforced their support for a letter against the bill.
