Homeland Security to roll out 3 AI-focused pilot projects

The Department of Homeland Security is launching a trio of pilot projects that use artificial intelligence.

The projects will launch within three sub-agencies of DHS. One for Homeland Security Investigations, or HSI, will use open-source technology to better detect and track fentanyl and identify perpetrators of child sex crimes.

The agency says another pilot within FEMA will work with local, state and tribal partners to craft more personalized disaster response plans for communities. The last project — within Citizenship and Immigration Services — will develop a training program for immigration officers.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced the projects as part of a new roadmap that outlines AI technology initiatives coming to DHS this year.
