Voters in the Arizona tourist town of Sedona are pushing back against a City Council vote earlier this month that would rezone part of a popular park to create a car camp for homeless workers.
The council voted 6-1 over opponents of the city’s "Safe Place to Park" program. The plan would offer people who work in Sedona but can’t afford to live there a haven to park at night, along with restrooms, showers and an attendant.
Grants are in place to pay for the program, equipment is scheduled to arrive in eight weeks and Sedona’s housing agency expected to start offering parking spaces in June.
But a petition for a referendum is underway. Petitioners need 597 signatures, or 10% of registered voters. If they garner those, the program will head to the ballot in November, along with four City Council seats.
