Final Four week has arrived in Arizona. And while the NCAA tournament games will get much of the attention, there’s another big basketball event taking place this weekend: the third annual HBCU All-Star Game at Grand Canyon University.
Travis Williams is a former college coach who is behind the event. Since there are no such schools west of Texas and Oklahoma, he hopes it will bring new awareness of them to a state with a relatively small Black population.
"Arizona was ... the last state to recognize Dr. King’s legacy and holiday here. We don’t have any HBCUs, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, in this part of the country. And a lot of folks are not familiar with them. So this is an amazing moment," Williams said.
In addition to the game on Sunday at GCU, there’s a college fair taking place on campus starting Wednesday to promote historically Black colleges and engage potential students.
