Federal immigration officials are adding a third gender option to the application for U.S. citizenship.
Prospective citizens can now choose female, male or X as their gender on the new version of the application for naturalization.
Those who would have chosen X and have a pending application can change their form.
But naturalized citizens who would have chosen X have to wait until federal officials update the application to replace their certificate.
The agency that processes such requests, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, says that the third gender option will also appear on revisions of other forms.
