Phoenix police chief fires officer who shot Ali Osman

The Phoenix police chief has fired an officer who shot a man who was throwing rocks near 19th and Glendale avenues.

The city already settled a wrongful death lawsuit with the man’s family for $5.5 million. Ali Osman had a mental health problem.

Officer Jesse Johnson has been fired because the Phoenix police chief determined his 2022 shooting of Osman was out of policy.

Court records say Johnson shot Osman when Osman was unarmed and turning away.

A former Phoenix police chief fired another officer who killed an Ahwatukee man who looked like he was trying to surrender. A lawsuit by the Ahwatukee man’s family ended with a multimillion dollar settlement.

And the city’s Civil Service Board reinstated the officer.

Johnson can also ask the Civil Service Board to put him back on the force.
