ADOT to partner with fiber optics company for broadband project

The Arizona Department of Transportation says it’s partnering with a private company to bring broadband to key rural areas of the state.

The initiative is part of a nationwide effort to bring broadband internet to U.S. communities — especially rural and Indigenous communities where connectivity is harder to come by.

ADOT and the Arizona Commerce Authority say a new partnership with the Nebraska-based fiber optics company eX2 Technology will streamline that process.

State officials say the 25-year agreement begins with installing fiber-optic conduits along three key interstate stretches across the state — including roughly 70 miles of I-19 between Tucson and Nogales.

Officials say in the coming months, internet service providers will be able to lease access to that conduit for their customers.
