Valley Metro holds town halls ahead of new fare system coming this summer

Valley Metro is scheduled to launch a new fare system this summer, but there is no specific date.

They’re phasing out paper fare cards in favor of an app, already in use, or new reloadable cards to let riders pay as they go on buses and light rail.

“Smart Fare ensures the cost of public transit remains predictable,” said Renata Cló, public information officer for Valley Metro, which has been holding town halls throughout metro Phoenix to explain what’s coming. “We understand this is a big change and we want to make it as smooth as possible for our riders.”

The next town hall is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 9 at the Peoria Community Center.
