Valley Metro seeks feedback on light rail extension toward AZ Capitol

Valley Metro is planning to extend the light rail west from downtown Phoenix toward the state Capitol and the transit service is seeking public input on the project.

The extension has been in the works since 2016, but legislation last year restricted how close the light rail lines could come to the Capitol building. So Valley Metro is modifying its plans. The route that’s now proposed would head west on Washington Street, south on 15th Avenue, then it would loop back east toward downtown on Jefferson Street.

Valley Metro is holding a series of public meetings and workshops about the plans from May 18 to May 22. Public comments can also be submitted online through June 7.

Meetings and workshops are scheduled:

  • In-person public meeting, Saturday, May 18, 10 a.m.-noon at Capitol Elementary School, 330 N. 16th Ave
  • Virtual public meeting, Monday, May 20, noon-1 p.m. Onlineor by phone at 408-418-9388
  • In-person workshop, Tuesday, May 21, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.  at Neighborhood Ministries, 1918 W. Van Buren St.
