The Peak Fire was reported Saturday evening and hasn’t made much progress since then, according to authorities. Fire crews expect to have it mostly contained early this week.
Amanda Oliver with the Tonto National Forest said the fire has burnt 360 acres of mostly open desert area near State Route 87 and is just under halfway contained.
“It’s all just open desert area, Sonora desert area,” said Oliver. “There’s no infrastructure, no value at risk other than our natural resources.”
Firefighters acted fast, she said, and have been working hard to shrink the flames over the weekend, using human-made and natural features in the area to help contain the Peak Fire.
“The areas that have been tough to get to are those that are up on the peaks, and up on the ridges,” Oliver said. “So [it’s] a bit hilly. And of course, desert, which always makes things a little more complicated when fighting fire.”
