Former University of Arizona grad student Murad Dervish is on trial for the 2022 on-campus shooting and murder of professor Thomas Meixner.
Patricia Grace, Dervish’s mother, took the stand to recount the voicemail her son left her the day of the shooting.
"Mom, I got to talk to you. I shot that guy. I hope he’s dead. I guess I have to kill myself now," Grace said, recounting the voicemail.
Grace also says her son had emotional issues growing up and pulled a knife on a babysitter when he was 10 years old.
A psychologist testifying for the defense said that, at the time of the shooting, Dervish was caught up in paranoia and delusion.
