ADOT warns drivers not to follow navigation app detours around Interstate 17 construction

Following a weekend of southbound closures on Interstate 17, headlined by drivers trying to make their own detours, the Arizona Department of Transportation is making some changes. This weekend, ADOT will be closing a northbound stretch on I-17.

This won’t be the end of weekend closures, as spokesman Doug Nintzel says they need more time to complete the project.

"We need an initial series of weekend closures in order to remove the older asphalt pavement on top of the freeway," Nintzel said.

ADOT is working towards reducing the chances of navigation apps directing drivers to go through local roads. Northbound I-17 will be closed between Loop 303 and State Route 74 from late Friday, May 17, to early Monday, May 20. ADOT encourages drivers to use the frontage road, which offers two travel lanes.
