Former Democratic lawmaker enters Phoenix City Council race against current AZ senator

A Democrat who recently resigned from the state Legislature is now running for a seat on the Phoenix City Council — against a former Democratic colleague.

Both Marcelino Quiñonez, who resigned from the state House in April, and Sen. Anna Hernandez (D-Phoenix), are now running for a spot on the Phoenix City Council.

Quiñonez filed a statement of interest in the race last week, while Hernandez has been in the running since April.

Hernandez and Quiñonez did not respond to a request for comment.

Three other candidates have also entered the race: Martyn Birdgeman, Emilio Avila and Lisa Perez.

Former council member Yassamin Ansari left the seat in District 7 open in March, when she resigned to run for Congress.

Carlos Galindo-Elvira was appointed by the City Council to serve the remainder of Ansari’s term, but he’s pledged not to run for reelection.
