Mesa police say collision that killed 7-year-old was not a hit-and-run

Mesa police say a 7-year-old girl who was fatally struck by a pickup truck in a driveway Thursday was not the victim of a hit-and-run, as originally suspected.

They say the driver was simply unaware that he had struck the girl, so he proceeded past the collision and parked in the back of the multiplex building.

Mesa detective Brandi Myers said the man then called 911 when he saw the girl and her scooter.

“He had no idea that he did this, until he parked behind the building and walked to the front of it, to see her lying in the driveway,” Myers said.

Police say the driver was not impaired or speeding, and will not face charges.
