Tucson is among a list of cities across the U.S. considered the most dangerous for pedestrians, according to a new report on traffic-related fatalities. The report comes from two research groups called Smart Growth America and the National Complete Streets Coalition. It uses data from 2022 and finds that more than 7,500 people nationwide were struck and killed while walking during that year — or an average of 20 people per day.
They say the number of deaths that occurred between 2018 and 2022 is roughly 26% higher than the number that occurred in the five-year period before that.
The study identifies 20 cities with the highest number of pedestrian deaths and finds that all but two are deadlier now then they were in 2017. Tucson is ranked as the third deadliest city in the count — with 217 deaths between 2018 and 2022.
