Voices of Arizona: Helping the homeless through lived experience

Open spaces by the train tracks that run through Chandler can be a frequent spot for those experiencing homelessness.

Bryan Kreskow and his pregnant wife were homeless only a few years ago. Now he helps those get out of that same spot in Chandler.

Bryan Kreskow is a community navigator for Chandler.

“I understand that I’ve lost many times, but I’m not a loser. You are not a failure. The only time we truly are failures is if we just give up," he said.

From Wednesday to Saturday, he tries to lead people out of something he’s experienced firsthand: homelessness.

“I don’t tell anybody what to do, but I tell everybody what I did when I was in their place and what worked for me," he said.

Kreskow is a five-time convicted felon and recovered heroin addict. He was homeless only a few years ago but utilized services to find housing, battle addiction and reconnect with his wife and daughter. Now he connects to those on the street with his own story.

“The amazing thing is people can change. But when you’re experiencing hopelessness, there’s no want or need for anybody to want to change," Kreskow said.

Because of the summer heat, getting the word out about cooling centers and a safe place to sleep is an even bigger priority. Kreskow drives throughout Chandler to ensure that knowledge and so much more is passed on.

”A lot of the people that I serve, they’ve been shunned by society. And just having a conversation with somebody can change somebody’s day completely," he said.
