An effort to save the second-oldest building in Gilbert is running out of time. Demolition is scheduled to begin Monday.
The Clare house is 106 years old and sits on a parcel in the downtown entertainment district, just off Gilbert Road. A private company bought the land and plans to build a new bar.
Preservationists hope to save the building, having it picked up and relocated in front of the Gilbert Historical Museum.
Casey Kendel chairs the town’s Redevelopment Commission. He says the developer has been understanding of efforts to save the house.
"The developer has been extremely gracious, on not only donations of the house itself, but with the timeline in which the efforts are to save it," Kendel said.
Kendel says they have the foundation in place at the complex where the museum is located.
"There is a space, no trees would be destroyed to set the house up," Kendel said.
Organizers are trying to raise $135,000 for the project by Monday.
