Tempe cracks down on traffic laws on these 4 roads through September

Tempe has identified its newest safety corridors as a way of reducing serious and fatal traffic injuries. Those areas will be under strict enforcement.

Safety corridors are sections of roads selected for heightened driver education and law enforcement. They’re designed to increase safety.

The designated as safety corridors from July to September are:

  • McClintock Drive from Apache Boulevard to Rio Salado Parkway.
  • 48th Street from Broadway Road to Southern Avenue.
  • Baseline Road from McClintock Drive to State Route 101.
  • Warner Road from Interstate 10 to Priest Drive.

The decision to make this designation comes following an analysis of city streets with a high number of fatal crashes

Ellie Volosin is a senior civil engineer with the city’s Traffic Engineering Department. She said there is a visual component to identifying the corridors.

“So our safety corridors are identified as approximately one mile stretches of roadway that we sign with the large yellow banners on the light poles," she said.

She explained how the city chose those streets.

"We look at a total of three years of serious and fatal crash location data and identify the hotspots. And then based on that, we identify the 16 corridors within the coming year where we can focus some safety measures," she said.

The enforcement forms a part of the city’s Vision Zero Action Plan, a road safety policy.
