A clinic in south Phoenix named for Olympic legend Jesse Owens is expanding to be able to provide affordable health care to more people in the surrounding community.
Purchased by Mountain Park Health Center just after the COVID-19 pandemic hit, construction has been going smoothly for the Jesse Owens building. The internal medicine department will be moving into the new building, which will feature almost 40 different exam rooms. Other additions to the building include new staff and provider lounges.
The current objective is to get the roof finished, which will allow for other tasks to fall in place. Phil Wojcik is the superintendent of the construction site.
“We start at 5 a.m., our working hours are 5 a.m. to 1:30, the guys that have been working on the roof have been coming in at 4 a.m. to try to beat the heat because by 10 o'clock it’s miserable up there," Wojcik said.
Wojcik said the project is expected to take the full timeline of just under a year. He expects to be finished by February 2025.
