Christmas tree permits for the Coconino National Forest went on sale starting at 8 a.m. on Nov. 14.

Those lucky enough to land one of the limited 2,200 permits will be able to start cutting their chosen tree on the same day.

Permits can be purchased online through the U.S. government's recreation.gov website.

The $15 permits for the national forest surrounding Flagstaff sell out quickly. Permit holders will be able to cut down a tree until Dec. 31.

Permits are currently available in three other Arizona forests: Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, Kaibab National Forest and Tonto National Forest.

Prescott National Forest permits are already sold out for the year.

The Bureau of Land Management is also offering permits for just $10 for trees on public lands on the Arizona-Utah border. Buy a permit at the Arizona Strip and St. George field offices, or online at forestproducts.blm.gov.

Horticulturists say the practice is actually part of a fire suppression effort to thin out smaller trees.
