The FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service on Tuesday worked with Phoenix police to search, seize and shut down a hotel near Interstate 17 and Bethany Home Road.
Owners and operators of the Royal Inn are accused of allowing widespread prostitution and drug trafficking activities there.
A 44-count indictment against the Royal Inn’s owner and several others was unsealed the same day.
According to the U.S. Attorneys' Office in Arizona, Phoenix police repeatedly notified hotel management of the criminal activities. The owners are also accused of intentionally profiting from criminal activity.
The hotel is in Phoenix City Councilwoman Betty Guardado’s district.
"This Royal Inn has long been a significant concern for me and the surrounding communities, with issues escalating over the years," Guardado said in a statement Tuesday afternoon. "For years, my office and members of the community have prioritized addressing the problems associated with the Royal Inn, including prostitution, drug dealing, and rising crime rates."
Guardado is holding a press conference Wednesday to address the issue.
