The IRS and the Arizona Department of Revenue are expanding their Direct File program.
“Direct File guides them through questions to help them prepare tax returns step by step,” said Sophia Solis with the state Department of Revenue. “And it shows the taxpayers the math so they can be sure their return is accurate and they’re getting their maximum refund.”
She added that the move will open up free filing for even more residents to file both federal and state taxes.
“During last year’s pilot year, about 6,000 Arizonans were able to use direct file,” said Solis. “But this year the IRS estimates that more than 1.1 million Arizonans are potentially eligible to participate.”
Solis said the program now covers a wider range of tax situations and offers detailed guidance for accurate returns.
“Direct File is expected to support more tax filing situations including more sources of income, deductions and tax credits,” said Solis.
Plus, she added, with Arizona’s existing online service people can transition smoothly from addressing federal returns to their state taxes in the same session. Solis said more information about how to qualify will be available later this year.
