The former site of Mesa’s Fiesta Mall is one step closer to redevelopment. Mesa City Council has approved a rezoning application that will allow new housing and retail to be built at the site.
Fiesta Mall for years sat along Southern Avenue and Alma School Road in Mesa. The mall had been vacant since 2019 and has now been completely demolished.
Tempe-based firm Verde Investments now owns the nine parcels that make up the site. After the unanimous approval of zoning changes for the 80-acre site, the developers say they can soon get to work transforming it into a mixed-use community.
“We’ve worked closely with Mesa’s planning team and leaders to craft a redevelopment plan that reflects the community’s values and aspirations,” David Leibowitz, spokesperson for Verde Investments, said in a press release. “This approval paves the way for a thriving, dynamic destination that will boost Mesa’s economy, create jobs, and help address the Valley’s housing shortage.”
Verde Investments’ Fiesta Redefined plan includes up to 4,000 housing units; retail, restaurant and office space; and bike- and pedestrian-friendly open spaces.
According to the project website, construction could take about a decade to complete.
