A month after its failed merger with Kroger, Albertsons is laying off employees, including 68 corporate and division support staff in Phoenix.
In a statement to KJZZ News, Albertsons said severance packages with extended benefits are being provided and no store level employees are among those laid off.
Albertsons has grown an offshore hub where it has outsourced administrative operations and the company said expanding offshore capabilities is one step to increasing productivity in a competitive environment.
Albertsons, which acquired Safeway in 2015, has about 130 stores in Arizona, most under the Safeway banner.
A company spokesperson wrote, ”Albertsons Companies, Inc. recently delivered solid third-quarter results in an increasingly competitive environment and our company is in strong financial condition. However, we cannot stand still and must constantly recalibrate our company to compete in a rapidly changing market.”
