Arizonans are honoring the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in a variety of ways.
A morning march from Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church to Hance Park kicked off daylong activities in Phoenix. Residents, community leaders and elected officials joined the two mile walk, including Gov. Katie Hobbs.
During last Friday’s annual MLK awards breakfast, she noted the holiday falls on the same day as the presidential inauguration.
“My greatest hope is that the next administration, like all elected officials, will remember the words of Dr. King and live up to the values that he stood for,” she said.
The march in Phoenix is followed by a festival at Hance Park until 4 p.m.
The Valley’s only MLK parade in downtown Mesa is followed by a festival and a screening of the movie “Selma” chronicling King’s campaign to secure voting rights during a 54- mile march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.
Mesa’s parade runs from 11 a.m. to noon and the festival runs until 4 p.m. at Mesa City Center, 56 E. Main St. The movie will be played at 1p.m. inside the ASU Mix Center in partnership with the Sidney Poitier New American Film School.
