Phoenix residents who live in the South Mountain Village are being asked to share their shopping and dining habits and recommendations. An online survey will be used to plan future retail opportunities.

The village covers roughly Interstate 17 to South Mountain Park and 19th Avenue to 48th Street. Councilwoman Kesha Hodge Washington, who represents the area, has read some early survey responses.

“They would like to see additional resources when it comes to grocery stores in that area,” she said. ”They've also seen certain restaurants they would like to see. It's kind of a mix. Some want to see more of the bigger chain. Some want to see more of a smaller, intimate-type chain, more higher-value type of restaurant.”

After the online survey closes on Jan. 31, a consultant will help identify and rank resident needs and match them with the demographic needs of different businesses.

Hodge Washington said her office will work with the city’s Community and Economic Development Department to organize a tour for established restauranteurs to see South Mountain Village and what’s available.

“So this is part of our steps toward planning a retail attraction plan for the South Mountain area so that they are not left to happenstance as to what type of development comes into their community. It is somewhat hopefully a little more intentional and coincides and aligns with the needs of the residents,” she said.
