On Wednesday, the City Council approved a one-year deal with Brooksee, a Utah-based company to produce the event.

Phoenix says it’s the only big city in the U.S. without a signature full marathon, but that could soon change.

Brooksee, a Utah-based event producer, pitched the city on holding an inaugural marathon on Dec. 13. If the council approves, the route will begin at Deer Valley Towne Center near Interstate 17 and Loop 101 and finish around Papago Park, roughly McDowell Road and 52nd Street.

The 26.2-mile race will have a USA Track and Field certified course for runners to qualify for the Boston and New York City marathons, along with the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

The event will include a half-marathon and 10K.

According to a City Council report, the first year event is expected to attract more than 5,000 people, including 4,000 from out of town. Hotel stays, visitor spending and event operations are expected to generate an economic impact between $1.7 million and $2 million. The organizer would be responsible for the costs of barricades, police staffing and cleanup.

On Wednesday, the City Council is scheduled to vote on a one-year agreement with Brooksee.
