Phoenix has two hotels in the works to add more than 450 rooms downtown, but experts say it’s not enough for the city to stay competitive in the convention business.
“Right now, within half a mile of the convention center, we have just around 4,500 hotel rooms, while a lot of cities that we compete against are anywhere from 7,500 to up to almost 12,000 hotel rooms in Atlanta,” said Eric Kerr, the vice president of Visit Phoenix, while addressing the City Council.
He said the rooms within a half-mile of the Phoenix Convention Center are about half the number of rooms in Atlanta, Austin, Seattle and Anaheim.
In March, the City Council will be asked to approve a request for proposals to turn a city-owned parking garage at Second and Adams streets into a full-service hotel with at least 400 rooms and ground floor commercial space.
