The Arizona Department of Health Services announced Friday the Trump administration has terminated nearly $200 million in COVID-19-related grants.
The terminations, totaling more than $190 million, means the end of multiyear plans meant to address the detection, response, prevention and control of infectious diseases.
According to the state health department, more than 269 contracts with local organizations, including county and tribal health departments, must now be cancelled.
The terminations will also stifle the launch of a statewide disease case surveillance system, a program created to address what the health department called gaps in public health infrastructure magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The state health department says it will work with partners to navigate the latest change and release more information when it becomes available.
