For the second year, Phoenix is celebrating 602 Day.
More than 250 businesses, sports teams and city departments are offering deals — most priced at $6.02 — events or gifts to bring the community together Monday.
Zack Wallace, 602 Day project lead, says this day was created to bring the community together and celebrate Arizona’s first area code.
“When we are out and about all day on June second the team is seeing connections being made, people celebrating Phoenix and coming together and really being proud of where they live,” said Wallace.
This day started after results from a 2023 city survey saying the Valley lacked community engagement.
“So we sought to pick a day on the calendar that we could really cultivate, you know, pride in our community; bring people together; facilitate connection and you know, support local businesses," said Wallace.
Wallace said the survey for 2024 showed a 10-percentage-point increase in community engagement and business reported more business than the same date in 2023.
The Phoenix Zoo reported more than 9,000 visitors on 602 Day last year. In summer, the zoo only sees about 1,000 visitors per day.
“We took the corresponding date of June 2 to create an opportunity for us to bring small business, local assets and other cultural institutions to celebrate the place we all call home,” Wallace said.
