Firefighters continue to work to contain two massive wildfires on the North Rim, but businesses on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon are reminding visitors they are open.
Julie Aldaz is the general manager of the Red Feather Lodge in Tusayan, just a few miles away from the South Rim. She says some visitors have opted to extend their stay because of the North Rim’s closures.
Others canceled.
"Some of it was because they were asthmatic or they had asthmatic children and they didn’t want to chance it with the smoke," Aldaz said.
There was also some confusion about the fire’s range.
"People just didn't understand when they were seeing Grand Canyon was on fire. they assumed its all of it. Like they didn’t understand the distance from the North Rim to the South Rim," Aldaz said.
Aldaz says you can smell smoke from time to time, depending on the winds. According to the National Park Service, the Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim is open.
Check the Grand Canyon National Park website for hours of operation and any trail closures.
