Phoenix resident to launch website for rating, reviewing HOAs

Homeowners associations sometimes face criticism for their restrictive regulations, high fees or even lack of transparency. A new website aims to give homeowners a chance to review their HOAs.

Bill McKay started HOADoctor.com so homeowners can rank their HOA board or property management company. McKay was inspired to create the website based on his own experiences living under an HOA.

McKay says the site vets users as homeowners.

“So what we're doing is we're giving those homeowners an opportunity to rate and review their experience. They can be anonymous or they can identify themselves through their name. But again, they have to be verified," he said.

McKay says HOAs' rules vary from community to community.

“There's rules against having a company vehicle in your car, in your driveway, if it's got the name of your company. There's rules about you going on to a rooftop to have your HVAC checked," he said.

The Arizona Department of Real Estate handles HOA disputes involving homeowners, but charges $500 for filing a complaint.

The website is set to launch in August.
